Dr. Thornbury is regarded by peers as one of the leading family physicians in the United States.  He began his medical education at the University of Kentucky matriculating from the College of Pharmacy as their first Honors Program graduate. He practiced five years in the rural Appalachian mountains for Virginia with career highlights that included a prestigious nationally acclaimed grant for diabetes education, serving as a VPhA journal editor and being named the Marion-Merrill Dow Distinguished Pharmacist of the Year.

 

Dr. Thornbury returned to study medicine at the University of Louisville School of Medicine graduating summa cum laude and completed a visiting internship with Harvard Medical School at The Cambridge Hospital. After graduation he accepted a highly-coveted residency position in general surgery under the direction of Dr. Hirham C. Polk, Jr., one one the foremost surgical educators in the world. Dr. Thornbury completed both an internship and additional year of residency in surgery.

In 1997, Dr. Thornbury moved to Glasgow to accept a position as the inaugural resident in family medicine at the University of Louisville’s Glasgow-Barren County residency program. He completed the three year requirement in two years and served as its first chief resident. 

 

Dr. Thornbury’s teaching and academic interest lies in the application of Lean systems to health delivery, training under the direct supervision of Toyota. Dr. Thornbury innovated and engineered the first mobile telemedicine system in the United States and has studied its influence in private practice in the care of acute and chronic disease. He is considered an international thought leader in the clinical application of mHealth authoring multiple publications and has given over 35 invited lectures throughout the United States and Europe over the past decade. 

 

Dr. Thornbury’s service to his profession includes holding a trustee position on the board of the Kentucky Medical Association; he has chaired the Commonwealth’s Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee, as well as, the Medicaid Physician Technical Advisory Committee. Dr. Thornbury was elected the 65th president of the Kentucky Academy of Family Physicians and has been acknowledged by colleagues as the Citizen Doctor of the Year in Kentucky, the highest honor afforded by KAFP.

 

Dr. Thornbury is a diplomat of the American Board of Family Medicine and holds a degree of Fellowship with the American Academy of Family Physicians. His private practice includes expertise in all general internal medicine, which includes all ages and genders. Dr. Thornbury has particular experience and a special emphasis on metabolic disorders, such as diabetes, skin and musculoskeletal disorders, and cardiovascular disease including heart failure, lipid disorders and hypertension.

 

Dr. Thornbury has been an active resident of Barren County for over two decades. He is privileged to serve on the board of education. He and his wife, Amy, enjoy two children, Britton and Chase.
